Dr Mark Lewney has a PhD in Guitar Acoustics and has been performing physics and maths shows around the world since 2005 when he won the very first FameLab. In 2008 Mark performed in 40 UK cities for the Institute of Physics Schools Lecture Tour with his lecture “Rock Guitar in 11 Dimensions”, and also performed at the Large Hadron Collider and Montreux Jazz Festival. He has performed at science festivals and music festivals worldwide, including Tokyo, Las Vegas, Seattle, a tour of Australia and New Zealand, and all over Europe.
His radio appearances as a guitar physics expert include Radio 4’s Material World and Radio 2′s Anatomy Of The Guitar with Harry Witchel of Spinal Tap/The Simpsons. On television, he wrote and presented his own 3 Minute Wonder on Channel 4, The Physics Of Rock Guitar, and has appeared on Newsnight and CBBC as “Einstein crossed with Hendrix”, and as a patent expert on The Money Programme and The One Show.
Mark combines his passion for science with legal rigour as a patent examiner, and also with his love of music as a touring lecturer on the subject of guitar physics. He works on telecoms patents and takes a keen interest in the numerous court cases around the world. Recently he has taken over responsibility for slightly different subject matter – speech recognition – which is becoming ever more significant as people increasingly talk to their phones.
